Historical context

Maximinus I, known as Maximinus Thrax, was Roman emperor from 235 to 238. Of Thracian origin, he rose through the military ranks and commanded the Legio IV Italica under Severus Alexander. Following Severus Alexander's murder in 235, the army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, marking the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. Maximinus was the first emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin until its gradual replacement during the reign of Gordian III. The obverse features a laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Maximinus with the legend MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM. The reverse depicts Fides holding a military standard in each hand, accompanied by the inscription FIDES MILITVM.
