Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, rising through military ranks to command the Legio IV Italica under Severus Alexander. Following Severus's murder, the Pannonian army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, inaugurating the Crisis of the Third Century. A barracks emperor of Thracian origin, he ruled until 238, when a senatorial revolt arose and he was assassinated near Aquileia while marching on Rome.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage that circulated across the Roman world until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title recorded in the legend "MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM". On the reverse, the coin features Providentia holding a wand over a globe and carrying a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "PROVIDENTIA AVG".
