Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having risen through the military ranks to hold high command under Severus Alexander. Following Severus's murder in 235, the Pannonian army proclaimed Maximinus emperor. His accession marked the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century, and he became the first Roman emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class before his death during the senatorial revolt of 238.

This bronze sestertius was produced at the Rome mint under Maximinus's authority. During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a large brass denomination originally valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses, which proved useful for commercial transactions. The coin bears the obverse legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG" and depicts the emperor in military attire on the reverse between two standards, accompanied by the legend "P M TR P P P S C".
