Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having been proclaimed emperor by the Pannonian army following the murder of Severus Alexander. He rose through the military ranks from a Thracian background and was the commander of Legio IV Italica prior to his elevation. His accession initiated the Crisis of the Third Century, and his reign ended when he was assassinated at Aquileia in 238.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is a denarius, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from c. 211 BC until its gradual replacement during the reign of Gordian III. The obverse features the bust of the emperor with the inscription "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse depicts Maximinus Thrax in military dress standing between two standards, holding a spear and raising his right hand, accompanied by the legend "P M TR P II COS P P".
