Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having been proclaimed by the Pannonian army following the murder of Emperor Severus Alexander. A commander of Thracian origin who rose through the military ranks, Maximinus was the first Roman emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class. His accession began the Crisis of the Third Century, a fifty-year era of civil war and instability.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued in the Roman Empire at two asses, or half of a sestertius. At the height of the empire, a dupondius could purchase approximately a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. The coin's obverse carries the legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG", whilst the reverse features Maximinus in military dress standing between two standards, holding a spear and raising his right hand, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P II COS P P S C".
