Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor between 235 and 238, having risen through the military ranks to hold high command under Severus Alexander. Following Severus Alexander's murder in 235, the army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, an event that marked the beginning of the Crisis of the Third Century. Maximinus was the first Roman emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class, and his reign concluded in 238 amidst a senatorial revolt.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius belongs to the imperial coinage system wherein the sestertius functioned as a denomination in Roman commerce, traditionally valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses. The coin bears the obverse inscription "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG" and depicts the figure of Providentia on the reverse alongside the legend "PROVIDENTIA AVG S C", showing her holding a wand over a globe and carrying a cornucopiae.
