Historical context

Maximinus Thrax reigned as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having risen through the military ranks to hold high command under Severus Alexander. Following Severus's murder, the Pannonian army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, marking the start of the Crisis of the Third Century. His rule ended in 238 during a senatorial revolt, when he was assassinated by soldiers of the Legio II Parthica while advancing on Rome.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius represents a denomination that served as a large coin in imperial commerce, historically valued at one quarter of a denarius or two and a half asses. The obverse presents the emperor with the imperial title "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "SALVS AVGVSTI S C" and depicts Salus seated and feeding a snake coiled round an altar from a patera.
