Historical context
Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait with the legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse legend "VICTORIA GERMANICA S C" accompanies an image of Maximinus, possibly depicted in military attire, standing with a short sceptre and a raised right hand while being crowned by Victory, with a captive seated at his feet. In the Roman Empire, sestertii represented large currency valued at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius, functioning as a denomination useful for commerce.
