Historical context
Maximinus I, known as Maximinus Thrax, was Roman emperor from 235 to 238. A soldier of Thracian origin who held command in the army of the Rhine under Severus Alexander, he was proclaimed emperor by the Pannonian army following Severus's murder in 235. His reign began the Crisis of the Third Century, and he ruled until he was assassinated at Aquileia in 238 during a senatorial revolt.
Struck at Rome, this bronze coin is a sestertius, a denomination that functioned in the Roman monetary system as one quarter of a denarius and had a nominal value of two and a half asses, making it useful for commerce. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG", whilst the reverse displays a four-line inscription enclosed within a wreath reading "VOTIS DECENNALIBVS S C".
