Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 until 238, having risen through the military ranks to command Legio IV Italica under Severus Alexander. Following Severus Alexander's murder in 235, the army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, marking the onset of the Crisis of the Third Century. Maximinus was the first emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class, and his reign ended when he was assassinated at Aquileia in 238.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued at two asses, or half of a sestertius. In imperial coinage, the dupondius was normally distinguished from the similarly sized as by the addition of a radiate crown on the imperial portrait, as seen in the obverse depiction of the emperor with the legend "IMP MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "VOTIS DECENNALIBVS S C" arranged in four lines within a wreath.
