Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having been proclaimed by the Pannonian army following the assassination of Severus Alexander. A commander of Legio IV Italica who rose through the military ranks, he was the first emperor from neither the senatorial nor the equestrian class. His accession marked the onset of the Crisis of the Third Century, a period characterised by civil war and instability.

This bronze sestertius was produced at the mint of Rome under the authority of Maximinus. In Roman imperial currency, the sestertius served as a coin valued in commerce at one quarter of a denarius, or two and a half asses. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait accompanied by the legend MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM, while the reverse depicts Pax holding a branch and sceptre alongside the legend PAX AVGVSTI S C.
