Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 to 238, having risen through the military ranks before being proclaimed emperor by the Pannonian army following the assassination of Severus Alexander. His reign ended in 238 when he was assassinated by troops at Aquileia during a senatorial revolt.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius represents a denomination valued during the empire at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius, used in commerce. The obverse bears the portrait and title "MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM". On the reverse, the legend "VICTORIA GERMANICA S C" accompanies a winged Victory holding a wreath and palm branch, set above a seated captive at her feet.
