Denarius in silver struck at Rome under Diadumenian, AD 217–AD 218, catalogued as RIC IV Macrinus 102b. Obverse: Bust of Diadumenian, bare-headed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Diadumenian, standing front, head right, holding standard in right hand and sceptre in left hand; on right, two standards surmounted by eagle, wreath on hand. Obverse legend: M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES. Reverse legend: PRINC IVVENTVTIS.

Historical context

Diadumenian was the young son of Roman Emperor Macrinus, who ruled jointly with him from April 217 to June 218 after the murder of Caracalla. Diadumenian was appointed caesar in May 217 and briefly elevated to co-emperor in May 218 during a revolt instigated by Julia Maesa in favour of Elagabalus. This silver denarius was struck in Rome, even though Macrinus never visited the capital during his reign. Following Macrinus's defeat at the Battle of Antioch on 8 June 218, both he and Diadumenian were captured and executed, after which the Senate subjected them to damnatio memoriae.
