Historical context

Diadumenian was the son of the Roman emperor Macrinus and became caesar in May 217, shortly following his father's accession to the throne. Later elevated to co-emperor in May 218 during the revolt of Elagabalus, Diadumenian fled towards the court of Artabanus IV of Parthia after Macrinus's defeat at the Battle of Antioch on 8 June 218. He was captured and executed in June 218.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. Bearing the obverse legend "M OPEL DIADVMENIANVS CAES", the piece presents him under his rank of caesar. The reverse depicts Diadumenian holding a baton and sceptre beside two standards, accompanied by the inscription "PRINC IVVENTVTIS". Following the defeat and deaths of Diadumenian and his father, the Senate condemned them as enemies of Rome and ordered their names erased and images destroyed.
