Historical context

Diadumenian was the son of the Roman emperor Macrinus. He was elevated to the rank of caesar in May 217, shortly following his father's accession to the imperial throne, and later served briefly as co-emperor in 218 during the revolt of Elagabalus. His brief tenure ended following Macrinus's defeat at the Battle of Antioch in June 218, after which Diadumenian was captured and executed, and subsequently condemned by the Senate.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver piece belongs to the standard Roman silver denomination, the denarius. Issued under Diadumenian's authority as caesar, the obverse legend identifies him as "M OPEL ANT DIADVMENIAN CAES", reflecting his formal imperial name Marcus Opellius Antoninus Diadumenianus. The reverse features the personification Spes accompanied by the legend "SPES PVBLICA".
