Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Emperor Caracalla before conspiring to have Caracalla murdered. Proclaimed emperor in the eastern provinces in April 217 and confirmed by the Senate, he ruled until June 218 jointly with his young son Diadumenianus. Macrinus never visited Rome during his reign, having inherited empty coffers, military conflicts, and subsequent unrest arising from his fiscal reforms and settlements with foreign kingdoms.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze as bears the obverse title "IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG". The reverse depicts the deity Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "IOVI CONSERVATORI S C". Despite being produced in the capital, Macrinus was overthrown near Antioch in June 218 by forces supporting Elagabalus, captured, and executed.
