Historical context
Macrinus reigned as Roman emperor from April 217 to June 218 alongside his young son Diadumenianus. Proclaimed emperor in the eastern provinces after conspiring in the murder of Caracalla, he was confirmed by the Senate despite being the first ruler not from the senatorial class. His administration faced empty coffers and multiple conflicts, and he never visited Rome during his brief rule.
This bronze sestertius was struck at the mint of Rome under Macrinus' authority. The obverse presents the emperor with the legend IMP CAES M OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG, while the reverse depicts Securitas seated before a lighted altar, holding a sceptre, accompanied by the inscription SECVRITAS TEMPORVM S C.
