Historical context

Marcus Opellius Macrinus reigned as Roman emperor from April 217 until June 218, ruling jointly with his young son Diadumenianus. Proclaimed in the eastern provinces and confirmed by the Senate after conspiring in the murder of Caracalla, Macrinus was the first emperor from an equestrian background and never visited Rome during his reign. His rule was cut short when he was overthrown in June 218.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC until its replacement under Gordian III. The coin names Macrinus on the obverse with the legend "IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "P M TR P II COS P P" and depicts the emperor togate and seated on a curule chair, holding a globe and a short sceptre.
