Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Emperor Caracalla before conspiring against him and having him murdered. Proclaimed Roman emperor in the eastern provinces by 11 April 217 and confirmed by the Senate, Macrinus reigned jointly with his young son Diadumenianus until June 218. He was the first emperor from an equestrian background and never visited Rome during his reign, inheriting conflicts against realms including Parthia.

Struck in silver at the mint of Rome, this coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin introduced c. 211 BC. The obverse presents Macrinus with the legend IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG. The reverse depicts Victory holding a wreath and palm, accompanied by the inscription VICT PART P M TR P II COS II P P.
