Historical context

Macrinus reigned as Roman emperor from April 217 until June 218, ruling jointly with his son Diadumenianus. Proclaimed emperor in the eastern provinces following the murder of Caracalla, he was confirmed by the Senate, becoming the first emperor who never visited Rome during his reign. Upon accession, he encountered empty imperial coffers and ongoing wars, attempting fiscal and economic reforms to restore stability to the Roman state.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the empire. The obverse presents the bust of the emperor with the legend "IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG". The reverse depicts Aequitas holding scales and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "AEQVITAS AVG". Although struck under his imperial authority in the capital, Macrinus remained in the east until he was overthrown in June 218.
