Historical context

Macrinus reigned as Roman emperor from April 217 to June 218, ruling jointly with his young son Diadumenianus. Proclaimed in the eastern provinces following the murder of Caracalla, Macrinus was confirmed by the Senate but never visited Rome during his reign. Inheriting depleted coffers and conflicts with Parthia, Armenia, and Dacia, he attempted diplomatic solutions and fiscal reforms to restore economic and diplomatic stability to the empire.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The coin names the emperor as "IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG" and carries the reverse inscription "FELICITAS TEMPORVM", depicting Felicitas with a caduceus and cornucopiae during a period when the administration sought to stabilise imperial affairs before military unrest led to Macrinus' overthrow in June 218.
