Historical context

Macrinus served as praetorian prefect under Caracalla before conspiring to murder him and taking power. Proclaimed emperor in April 217 in the eastern provinces, he was confirmed by the Senate, becoming the first emperor of equestrian origin and the first who never visited Rome during his reign. His rule ended in June 218 when he was overthrown at the Battle of Antioch following military unrest.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver denomination of the period. Its obverse depicts the emperor with the legend "IMP CM OPEL SEV MACRINVS AVG", while the reverse displays Fides holding two standards with the legend "FIDES MILITVM", directly addressing the loyalty of the armed forces during a reign marked by fiscal reforms and military tensions that ultimately culminated in rebellion.
