Historical context

Maximinus Thrax served as Roman emperor from 235 until 238, having risen through the military ranks to hold high command on the Rhine under Severus Alexander. Following Severus's murder, the army proclaimed Maximinus emperor, initiating the Crisis of the Third Century. His reign concluded in 238 during a senatorial revolt, when he was assassinated at Aquileia while marching on Rome.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius was issued under the authority of Maximinus and Maximus.
