Historical context

Pacatian was a Roman usurper active in the Danube region during the reign of Emperor Philip the Arab, dying around AD 248. This silver antoninianus was produced between AD 248 and AD 249 at Viminacium, a major city, military camp, and provincial capital of Moesia Superior. As usurpers frequently needed coinage to retain the allegiance of their troops, the issue features an invocation of military harmony.
