Historical context

Tiberius Claudius Marinus Pacatianus, known in English as Pacatian, was a Roman usurper who rebelled in the Danube region during the rule of Philip the Arab before dying around 248. The antoninianus, originally introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD as a silver double denomination showing the emperor wearing a radiate crown, was widely produced by soldier emperors and usurpers to secure the loyalty of their troops. Pacatian struck this issue at Viminacium, a significant military camp and the capital of Moesia Superior situated along the Via Militaris.
