Historical context

Publius Helvius Pertinax became Roman emperor in 193 following the assassination of Commodus, initiating the Year of the Five Emperors. A former military commander and senator from modest origins, he attempted to restore army discipline and financial stability during his brief reign. His reforms alienated the Praetorian Guard, leading to his murder after 87 days.
