Historical context

Pertinax served as Roman emperor for the first three months of 193, becoming the first ruler of the Year of the Five Emperors following the assassination of Commodus. The son of a freedman, he achieved high office through a military career, governorships, and senior commands. During his brief rule of 87 days, he sought to restore military discipline and imperial financial stability before being killed by the Praetorian Guard.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced around 211 BC. The obverse depicts the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG", reflecting his imperial title. On the reverse, the draped figure of Providentia stands holding her right hand up towards a star and resting her left on her breast, framed by the legend "PROVID DEOR COS II".
