Historical context

Pertinax served as Roman emperor for the first three months of 193, succeeding Commodus as the first ruler during the Year of the Five Emperors. Having risen through senior military posts and commands, he sought to restore military discipline and imperial financial stability upon taking office, though his attempted reforms led the Praetorian Guard to assassinate him after 87 days in power.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin belongs to the standard imperial silver denomination that served Roman monetary circulation from c. 211 BC until the mid-third century AD. The piece identifies Pertinax as emperor with the obverse inscription "IMP CAES P HELV PERTIN AVG", while the reverse bears the legend "OPI DIVIN TR P COS II" and depicts the goddess Ops draped and seated upon a throne holding two corn-ears.
