Historical context

Philip the Arab ruled the Roman Empire from 244 to 249, marking an unusually stable period during the crisis of the third century. Born in Shahba, Philip was proclaimed emperor following the death of Gordian III. He subsequently returned to Rome to receive senatorial confirmation, governing until his defeat and death against Decius near Verona in 249.

This silver antoninianus was minted in Rome under Philip's authority. Thought to have been valued at two denarii, antoniniani featuring female subjects customarily showed the bust resting upon a crescent moon, distinguishing the double denomination. The obverse depicts Otacilia Severa alongside the inscription "M OTACIL SEVERA AVG", while the reverse carries the legend "CONCORDIA AVGG" alongside Concordia seated with a patera and double cornucopiae.
