Historical context

Philip I, commonly known as Philip the Arab, was Roman emperor from 244 to 249 following the death of Gordian III. Born in what was then Arabia Petraea, Philip ruled during the crisis of the third century, returning to Rome after negotiating peace with the Sasanian Empire. His five-year reign was marked by military operations against the Carpi in 246 and the celebration of Rome's millennium in 248.

Struck at Rome under the authority of Philip the Arab, this silver antoninianus was a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. Characterised by the radiate crown denoting a double denomination, the coin features Philip II on the obverse with the legend "M IVL PHILIPPVS CAES". The reverse pairs the inscription "PRINCIPI IVVENT" with Philip II holding a globe and standard, with a captive at his feet.
