Historical context

Philip the Arab, born in Shahba in Arabia Petraea, ruled as Roman Emperor from 244 until his death at Verona in 249. Proclaimed emperor after Gordian III died during a campaign against the Sasanian Empire, Philip secured peace with the Sasanians and travelled to Rome to obtain confirmation from the Senate, governing during the third-century crisis alongside his co-ruler.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Rome. Originally introduced under Caracalla in 215 AD as a denomination valued at two denarii, the antoninianus characteristically indicated its status through a radiate crown on imperial male busts. The obverse bears the portrait of Philip II with the legend IMP PHILIPPVS AVG, while the reverse depicts Philip the Arab and Philip II seated on curule chairs with the legend LIBERALITAS AVGG III.
