Historical context

Philip the Arab was Roman Emperor from 244 to 249, having been proclaimed emperor after Gordian III died during the Sasanian campaign. Following a negotiated peace with the Sasanians, Philip returned to Rome to obtain confirmation from the Senate. Although his five-year reign witnessed events such as Rome's first millennium celebrations in 248, it ended in September 249 when he was defeated and killed near Verona by Decius.

This silver antoninianus was produced at the mint of Rome. Introduced under Caracalla in 215, the antoninianus was a Roman coin thought to be valued at two denarii, distinguished by the depiction of the emperor wearing a radiate crown. The obverse presents Philip's radiate bust with the legend "IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG". The reverse bears the inscription "ADVENTVS AVGG" and depicts Philip on horseback pacing left, raising his right hand and holding a spear.
