Historical context

Philip the Arab, born Marcus Julius Philippus in Shahba, Syria, ruled the Roman Empire from 244 to 249. Proclaimed emperor following the death of Gordian III during a campaign against the Sasanian Empire, he negotiated peace with the Sasanians and returned to Rome to obtain confirmation from the Senate. Although his reign faced subsequent conflicts, it formed an unusually stable interval amidst the crisis of the third century.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is an antoninianus, a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 and thought to have been valued at two denarii. The radiate crown on the obverse indicated its status as a double denomination, accompanied by the title "IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG". The reverse presents Pax alongside the legend "PAX AETERN", holding a branch and a transverse spear.
