Historical context

Pupienus, recorded in contemporary texts as Marcus Clodius Pupienus Maximus, served as Roman emperor alongside Balbinus for 99 days in 238, during the Year of the Six Emperors. This bronze issue was produced at the mint of Rome under his imperial authority during the Roman Empire.

The coin is a sestertius, a denomination originating as an ancient Roman coin useful for commerce, originally valued at two and a half asses or one quarter of a denarius. The obverse features the bust of Pupienus with the legend IMP CAES M CLOD PVPIENVS AVG. The reverse design depicts Liberalitas holding an abacus and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription LIBERALITAS AVGVSTORVM S C.
