Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver antoninianus belonged to a denomination introduced by Caracalla in early 215 AD and valued at two denarii. The denomination regularly depicted the emperor wearing a radiate crown to indicate its double value, as seen on the obverse alongside the legend "IMP CAES CLOD PVPIEN MAXIMVS AVG". The reverse depicts clasped right hands accompanied by the inscription "AMOR MVTVVS AVGG".
