Historical context

Severus Alexander was Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, becoming the last ruler of the Severan dynasty after succeeding his cousin Elagabalus. Assuming sole rule at the age of 13, his thirteen-year reign was the longest of a sole emperor since Antoninus Pius, ending with his assassination in March 235 AD.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver coin denomination, which had served from its introduction circa 211 BC until its gradual replacement under Gordian III. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG" alongside a depiction of the emperor. The reverse features Jupiter holding a thunderbolt and sceptre, accompanied by the inscription "IOVI CONSERVATORI".
