Historical context

Severus Alexander ruled the Roman Empire from 222 until 235 AD, the final emperor of the Severan dynasty. Having succeeded his cousin Elagabalus at the age of thirteen, he became the youngest sole emperor of the united empire. His mother, Julia Mamaea, served as one of his principal advisors throughout his thirteen-year reign until both were assassinated in March 235 AD during a military conspiracy.

Struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Severus Alexander, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver currency of the imperial Roman monetary system. The coin features Julia Mamaea on the obverse with the inscription "IVLIA MAMAEA AVG". The reverse depicts Felicitas, draped and holding a caduceus while leaning upon a column, accompanied by the inscription "FELICITAS PVBLICA".
