Historical context

This silver coin was produced at the Rome mint under the authority of Severus Alexander, the last Roman emperor of the Severan dynasty, who reigned from 222 until 235 AD. Severus Alexander succeeded his cousin Elagabalus and governed alongside his mother, Julia Avita Mamaea, until both were assassinated in March 235 AD, an event that marked the start of the Crisis of the Third Century.

Struck as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin since the Second Punic War, the piece bears the obverse portrait of the emperor's mother, designated by the legend IVLIA MAMAEA AVG. The reverse honours the goddess Juno with the inscription IVNO CONSERVATRIX, depicting her holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by a peacock at her feet.
