Historical context
Severus Alexander was Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, becoming the youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire and the final ruler of the Severan dynasty. He succeeded his cousin Elagabalus and ruled under the prominent influence of his mother, Julia Avita Mamaea. His thirteen-year reign ended in March 235 AD, when a military conspiracy resulted in the assassination of Alexander and his mother during campaigns against Germanic tribes.
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the imperial coinage issued under Severus Alexander honouring Julia Mamaea. The obverse depicts the diademed bust of the empress with the inscription "IVLIA MAMAEA AVG", whilst the reverse portrays the deity Vesta draped, holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by the legend "VESTA".
