Historical context

Severus Alexander ruled as Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, becoming the final ruler from the Severan dynasty. Having succeeded his cousin Elagabalus at the age of 13, his thirteen-year reign was the longest of a sole emperor since Antoninus Pius. Although his governance brought internal peace, the empire confronted external military threats from the Sassanid Empire and Germanic tribes before his assassination in 235 AD.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze as was issued under Severus Alexander's authority. The obverse presents the emperor with the legend "IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG". The reverse combines an image of the seated emperor crowned by Victory with the standing figure of Virtus and a shield inscribed "VOT X" on a low column, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P VIIII COS III P P S C".
