Historical context

Marcus Aurelius Severus Alexander was Roman emperor from 222 until 235 AD, representing the last emperor from the Severan dynasty. Having succeeded his slain cousin Elagabalus at the age of 13, he became the youngest sole emperor of the united Roman Empire. His thirteen-year reign was managed alongside his mother Julia Avita Mamaea, operating from Rome before ending in assassination in March 235 AD.

This bronze sestertius was struck at the Rome mint under the authority of Severus Alexander. In the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a coin denomination valued in commerce at two and a half asses, or one quarter of a denarius. The issue depicts a diademed, draped bust of Orbiana alongside the obverse legend "SALL BARBIA ORBIANA AVG". The reverse portrays the seated figure of Concordia holding a patera and double cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "CONCORDIA AVGVSTORVM S C".
