Historical context

Septimius Severus reigned as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, taking power after the death of Pertinax during the Year of the Five Emperors. Following civil conflicts against rivals Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, Severus conducted military campaigns in the east against the Parthian Empire. These operations culminated in the sacking of the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon, in 197 and expanded Rome's eastern frontier to the Tigris.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage in circulation. The coin commemorates the military successes of Severus in the east, bearing the obverse legend "L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX" and the reverse legend "VICT PARTHICAE".
