Historical context

Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 until his death in 211, founding the Severan dynasty. After taking power following the death of Pertinax and overcoming rival claimants, he waged a successful war against the Parthian Empire, sacking Ctesiphon in 197 and expanding the eastern frontier to the Tigris. His elder son, Caracalla, was proclaimed co-emperor in 198.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination from the Second Punic War until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse bears the legend "SEVERVS AVG PART MAX", marking his victory over Parthia, while the reverse depicts the emperor in military attire sacrificing over a tripod, accompanied by the inscription "RESTITVTOR VRBIS".
