Historical context

After eliminating his rival claimants, Severus waged war against the Parthian Empire in the east, sacking the capital Ctesiphon in 197 and expanding the eastern frontier to the Tigris.

Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that had circulated since the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse legend "SEVERVS AVG PART MAX", marking his Parthian campaigns, alongside a reverse showing Victory flying with a wreath and a shield, accompanied by the inscription "VICT AETERN".
