Historical context

Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, securing the imperial throne during the Year of the Five Emperors and establishing the Severan dynasty. His reign involved military operations across several frontiers, including campaigns in the East, Africa, and ultimately Britain, where he travelled in 208 to strengthen Hadrian's Wall before his death at Eboracum in 211.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this piece was issued as a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse inscription "SEVERVS PIVS AVG" alongside a depiction of the emperor, while the reverse displays Jupiter brandishing a thunderbolt and holding a sceptre, accompanied by the legend "P M TR P XVI COS III P P".
