Historical context

Born in Leptis Magna, he consolidated his control through civil conflicts before undertaking military campaigns across the empire. Together with his wife Julia Domna, Severus established the Severan dynasty, naming his elder son Caracalla co-emperor in 198 and his younger son Geta in 209.

Produced at the mint of Rome, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse depicts a laureate head of the emperor, accompanied by the legend "SEVERVS PIVS AVG". The reverse design depicts Jupiter holding a sceptre and thunderbolt with two children standing at his feet, framed by the imperial titles "P M TR P XVII COS III P P".
