Historical context

After eliminating his rival claimants Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, and Clodius Albinus, Severus conducted a campaign in the east against the Parthian Empire. This conflict culminated in the sack of the Parthian capital, Ctesiphon, in 197 and the expansion of the Roman frontier to the Tigris.

Minted in Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire. The obverse bears the portrait of the emperor alongside the legend "SEVERVS PIVS AVG". The reverse depicts Victory carrying a wreath and palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "VICT PART MAX", celebrating Severus's military successes against Parthia.
