Historical context

Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 until his death in 211. Born in Leptis Magna, he seized imperial power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. After eliminating rival claimants and consolidating rule, he conducted major campaigns on the eastern frontier, in Africa, and later in Britain, establishing the Severan dynasty with his sons Caracalla and Geta.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait alongside the legend "SEVERVS PIVS AVG". The reverse depicts the emperor veiled and togate, performing a sacrifice over an altar with a patera, accompanied by the inscription "VOTA SVSCEPTA XX".
