Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. To secure and expand the empire, he eliminated rival claimants, annexed the Kingdom of Osroene, and waged war against the Parthian Empire, sacking Ctesiphon in 197. This denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination since its introduction around 211 BC, was produced at Laodicea ad Mare, historically known also as Laodicea in Syria.
