Historical context

After eliminating his rival claimants, Pescennius Niger and Clodius Albinus, he consolidated his authority across the empire. Together with his second wife, Julia Domna, he established the Severan dynasty, elevating their sons Caracalla and Geta as co-emperors during his reign.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that circulated from the Second Punic War until the mid-third century. The piece features Julia Domna on the obverse, accompanied by the inscription "IVLIA DOMNA AVG". The reverse depicts Venus holding an apple and a palm while leaning against a column, paired with the legend "VENERI VICTR".
